Who Is This Man? Director’s Notes

All the disciples are standing up in a diagonal position across the stage, from UP LEFT to DOWN RIGHT. The chairs are positioned diagonally around the outside of the disciples to

give the impression that they are inside a boat. The chairs will also help the characters have something to hold onto and fall onto as they are being tossed about the boat in the storm.

The Narrator remains offstage and reads the script using a microphone. While this is being done the disciples are on the boat looking out to sea, so they are staring at whatever is facing them ahead. They are miming as if talking to each other while looking out to sea. They are also rocking slightly.

Jesus is positioned behind the disciples (UP LEFT) lying on the floor so he cannot be seen at the beginning of the play. However, if he can be seen once the characters start moving about, it does not matter as it will be evident that he is asleep and unperturbed by what is going on around him. When Jesus is woken up, he gets up and moves slowly towards the front of the stage (DOWN RIGHT) but stands sideways so his face can be seen by the audience.

The storm is coming from the direction of DOWN LEFT, so the disciples are faced in this direction as the dialogue begins. At various stages, the disciples duck to avoid the waves and some put their arms up to cover their eyes. A few of them hide behind someone else and others cling on to each other out of desperation.
