Just One Touch: Director’s Notes

The play begins with the sick woman sitting at a dressing table looking into a mirror. She is facing sideways so the audience can see her and a glimpse of her reflection in the mirror. She is brushing her hair very slowly and carelessly as if she doesn’t believe having neat hair will make much difference to how she feels. On line 38, she gets up and walks towards an imaginary door DOWN LEFT. The crowd of people enter the stage UP LEFT and a few people head towards the dressing table and chair and stand in front it so that people at the back can discreetly move it to the side away from the main stage. They then move back towards Jesus who is standing UP LEFT with the rest of the crowd. The woman pauses her dialogue while trying to see Jesus at the front. She tiptoes and moves her body from left to right to get a better glimpse of him. Jesus and the crowd should be facing RIGHT and the sick woman turns so she’s facing the same direction. When she falls to her knees and grabs Jesus’ garment, she is sideways facing RIGHT so that the audience can see what is happening. Jesus turns around and is facing LEFT but does not look down at the sick woman until she speaks.

The Narrator will be unseen, positioned backstage with a microphone. Alternatively, if there is no P.A. equipment, then the Narrator may enter the stage, and read the bible verse facing the audience DOWN CENTRE.

As the Narrator begins to read, the woman and Jesus walk off stage towards UP RIGHT then slowly the crowd follows behind them. (If the Narrator is needed to come onto the stage, they will wait for them to be positioned before walking off the stage.)
